Organization: MCAA

MCAA Members Are Invited to Participate in TAUC’s Union Craft Labor Supply Survey

The Association of Union Constructors (TAUC) invites MCAA members to participate in its 2023 Union Craft Labor Supply Survey, the industry’s only union-specific survey focused on construction and maintenance. The survey is once again being conducted in conjunction with the Construction Labor Research Council (CLRC).

The survey responses provide for a detailed, data-driven picture of the current state of the labor supply throughout the United States. The resulting data set allows for educated decision making and action that can both strengthen our industry and increase market share.

Your responses are confidential, submitted anonymously and will be analyzed to create a final report that will be shared with MCAA members when it is available this spring.

Congratulations to Our Newest IPM Graduates

There’s a reason that MCAA’s Institute for Project Management (IPM) team love what they do: it’s the students. The members of classes 83 and 84 were no exception. Seventy-two participants from MCAA member companies consistently brought their A-game to every class: from Negotiation to Cost Control, from Scheduling to Change Order Negotiation. With enthusiasm and curiosity, they studied and practiced tried-and-true strategies taught by our seasoned contractor-instructors, asked great questions, and learned as much from each other as from our expert instructors. Congratulations to our newest IPM graduates!

Constantly Reimagined to Address Today’s Challenges

Founded in 1987, MCAA’s Institute for Project Management is older than many of the project managers who attend. But the hallmark of our program is that it is ever-changing and evolving to keep pace with the challenges facing the mechanical industry today. Our curriculum is constantly evaluated and reimagined by our dedicated Project Management Education Committee volunteers; and informed by feedback from our students about what they need to know to be the best project managers (PMs) in the industry. The lessons learned at IPM are invaluable to attendees from companies both big and small.

In-Demand Training Delivers a Great Return on Investment

The IPM is MCAA’s most in-demand project management training program, and so it has enrollment limits. If you have a top-notch PM with 3+ years of experience, sign them up and we will deliver a great return on investment not just for them as individuals, but for your company as a whole.

Registration Will Open January 30 for the Next Classes

Mark your calendars! Registration for our April-start programs will open at 12pm EST on January 30. To learn more about the program, click the button to visit our course webpage.

BLS Reports Slight Decline in Construction Industry Union Representation in 2022

Union representation rates in the construction industry fell slightly in 2022, decreasing to 12.4%, with 1,076,000 of the 8,671,000 workers “represented” by unions, down from 13.6% in 2021 (1,112, 000 of the 8,157,000 employed).  Among those 1,076,000 represented by unions, 1,019,000 were classified as union members, leaving some 57,000 (roughly 5%) of the remainder classified as represented by unions (covered by a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) but not reported as union members.

In 2021, 1,024,000 of the 1,112,000 represented by unions were classified as members, leaving some 88,000 (some 8%) classified as represented or covered by a CBA, but not counted as union members – as judged by responses to the BLS Current Population Survey questions that are the basis of the annual report. (Union Members – 2022, USDL-23-0071, January 19, 2023).

According to the BLS report, median weekly earnings among all full-time wage and salary workers in the construction industry came to $1,007 in 2022, up from $966 the year before. In 2022, union members were credited with $1,319 per week, as compared with $1,306 for those non-members covered by a labor contract, and $976 per week for non-union workers.  In 2021, the amounts were: $966 for all workers; $1,344 for union members; $1,322 for non-members covered by a CBA; and $922 for non-union workers.

MCAA Note – The differential between union membership and union representation rates may reflect the impact and change in right-to-work laws in any state.  BLS data on union membership rates over the years is available on a state-by-state basis on the BLS website. The state data reflects total union membership rates and is not broken down by public or private sectors or by industry.

Dynamic MEP Innovation Conference Highlights Ideas and Collaboration in Construction

With modern building practices, MEP contractors must coordinate precisely in their design and building for jobs to be profitable. In Austin, Texas, members from MCAA, NECA and SMACNA extended that collaboration at the MEP Innovation Conference. Members of the three associations came together to learn from each other on how new technologies are impacting their businesses.

The bourgeoning conference brought over 600 attendees from the MEP trades to better understand different viewpoints, roles and responsibilities.

“This conference is quickly growing every year and the reason is simple – innovators come together across the trades and share honest feedback and ideas,” said Stacy Zerr, MCAA Innovative Technologies Chair. “If you want to learn about new processes, software or products, attendees will share with you how they made their solutions work for them.”

Sharing insights and team building went further than the presentations. Networking opportunities, roundtables and workshops helped contractors interact more directly with each other. One of the conference highlights that showcased the interaction was the closing workshop, Applying Lean Manufacturing Approaches to a Multi-Trade Environment, led by Charlie Dunn from DPR. The workshop used a combination of challenges, games, interactions and collaboration to drive home points on collaboration.

Another new feature of the conference was an optional facility tour. Hosts included Dynamic Systems, Inc, Procore Innovation Center, JATC 286 Training Center and 3M Electrical Innovation Center. Contractors were able to get a first-hand look at innovations in VDC strategy, training and product development.

Plans are already underway for the 2024 MEP Innovation Conference, but further education is also in the works to bridge the gap between conferences. Be on the lookout for innovation education during the MCAA Convention and the 2023 Fabrication Conference.

Doug Smith of Dynamic Systems Inc. Named MCAA Innovator of the Year

The MCAA Innovative Technology Committee recognized Doug Smith from Dynamic Systems, Inc. as the 2023 Innovator of the Year at the annual MEP Innovation Conference hosted by MCAA, NECA and SMACNA last week in Austin, Texas. Smith is the director of VDC technology at Dynamic Systems, Inc., a Texas-based contractor, and leads the design and coordination process between a team of over 120 people.

Recognized by his peers for his leadership in research, process integration from virtual design to fabrication, and his ability to be a resource to colleagues in the industry. Smith has previously presented at the MEP Innovation Conference, MCAA Fabrication Conference and the MCAA Technology Conference.

“Doug is one of the best people in the industry to know,” said Travis Voss, the Helm Group’s leader of innovative technologies. “When you are at a roadblock on something, more than likely he has faced the same challenge and will tell you how he fixed it. That kind of candor is part of the amazing culture he brings to the industry, and we all try to emulate.”

About the award: The MEP Innovator of the Year award is given each year at the MEP Innovation Conference to recognize the people driving research and innovation in the industry. A representative from MCAA, NECA and SMACNA is recognized each year.

New Internship Grant Process for 2023

MCAA wants to hear about all of your mechanical contracting interns and has revised the internship grant application process to ensure program success is being rewarded and celebrated.

Part 1: MCAA members with one intern are eligible for a $1,000 grant. Companies with two or more interns may receive a $2,000 grant. One form should be filled out for each intern.

Part 1 applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis and may be submitted once per calendar year, per intern.

Part 2: For companies successfully converting an intern (from their part 1 list) to a full-time new hire, a $500 gift card will be mailed to the company to present to their new hire. These new hire conversations are now unlimited, but the name of the new hire must be included on a part 1 list from an MCAA member company to be eligible.

Part 2 applications may not be submitted until after their full-time start date.
