Find Out How Financial Decisions Impact Stakeholders at MCAA2020

When is it acceptable to engage in a transaction that technically complies with the rules but may be misleading? Can a transaction that technically complies with the rules be considered unethical or illegal? Is it ever appropriate to depart from Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)? Andrew Fastow will cite examples of such transactions at major companies, he will discuss the rationalizations made by executives to justify their decisions and he will discuss examples of how these decisions can cause great harm to stakeholders. MCAA thanks Apollo Valves for sponsoring this speaker. Learn more about Fastow and find out what else is in store at MCAA2020 on our convention website.

Congratulations to Our Advanced Leadership Institute Course 19 Graduates

As frost signified the beginning of a new season in Boston last week, we celebrated a new class of graduates from the MCAA’s Advanced Leadership Institute (ALI), bringing the total number of ALI graduates to 599.

Industry leaders including CEOs, Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and Directors from both the construction and service sectors came together this fall to engage in two intensive weeks of study, covering topics like conflict resolution, strategic decision-making, personal leadership style, finance, leading organizational change, effective communication, and a whole lot more.

In addition to their 70 hours of classroom instruction, participants conducted independent team research projects in which they tackled current issues facing mechanical contractors and developed best practices for approaching these challenges.

They engaged their professors and their peers to ask the hard questions, share their own experiences, and build a network that we hope they will maintain for the duration of their careers. While Babson College and its faculty are ranked nationally, it was the engagement, enthusiasm, and expertise of participants at ALI Course 19 that made the experience what it is meant to be – the premiere forum for growth and development of leaders in the mechanical industry.

MCAA is proud to facilitate the investment that our member companies make in their leadership. Graduates of the Advanced Leadership Institute demonstrate time and again that people are what drive our industry to continued and future success.

Admission to MCAA’s flagship educational program is highly competitive, and space is limited. The application for ALI Course 20 will be released on February 12, 2020. More information.

Distracted driving poses significant risk to every business that has employees who drive both company-owned and personal vehicles for company business. Common activities that divert attention from the road include texting, most mobile phone use, eating and drinking, reaching for an object, talking with a passenger, and reading navigation systems. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), for the second consecutive year, more than 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2017. Learn How this Captain Survived a Hijacking at MCAA2020

We all aspire to live bravely in the face of life’s significant challenges, but few of us are tested under the guns of hostile pirates who threaten our leadership, authority, lives and colleagues. Before Somali pirates hijacked Captain Richard Phillips’ cargo ship and held him captive for five days, making him the center of a riveting international drama that played out live on television, he was as normal as each of us, doing our best at work and home. Phillips will share his compelling story and relate his experience as a “floating CEO,” in charge of the day-to-day operations of a multi-million-dollar ship and the crew he managed. Michelle Collier Receives Everyday Hero Award at MSCA19

Five years ago, the MSCA introduced the Everyday Hero award to recognize a member employee who in their own way gives their time and skills to benefit others.  These individuals lend a hand solely out of the goodness of their hearts, without looking for recognition, which can often make them hard to find.

This year the MSCA received many nominations for people in our industry that are doing extraordinary things in their communities. We are so proud to have so many people doing such great things. This year’s recipient, Michelle Collier, office manager for Warwick Mechanical Group in Newport News, VA, was truly deserving.

Michelle spends her Wednesday evenings volunteering at Nations Church, providing meals to the homeless. She also gives her time to the Butterfly House, a faith-based organization that helps minor girls who have been rescued from sex trafficking.

MSCA presented Michelle with a check for $5,000 to the All Nations Outreach Program.

Last year, Michelle went to North Carolina to help rebuild homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Florence.

Ron Clark, Vice President of Warwick Mechanical, nominated Michelle saying “her drive to help people and get the work done is a real inspiration. You can see the true character of a person when they’re in a crawl space of a recently flooded house removing insulation and duct work under conditions that are hard to describe.”

He went on to add “there is no hesitation when something needs to be done, she is there until the job is completed. She brings that same drive and service to the company and others on the team. Selfless, sacrifice, caring, empathy, and all that packaged into an extremely capable manager.”

Michelle thanked Warwick Mechanical, saying that she is blessed “to work for a company that truly believes in investing in the community and giving back and providing lots of opportunities for their employees to do so.”

Congratulations Michelle for this much deserved award.

Celebrate MCAA Award-winners with a Hall-of-Fame Quarterback at MCAA2020

Widely considered the best NFL quarterback of all time, Joe Montana personifies performance excellence and personal integrity both on and off the field. Yet the word most closely associated with him is not “winner”—it’s “leader.” Since retiring from the NFL, Montana has become a popular motivational speaker, active real estate investor and author. In 2005, Montana co-authored The Winning Spirit: 16 Timeless Principles That Drive Performance Excellence, with performance coach Tom Mitchell. Montana now brings his lessons of preparation, teamwork and performance under pressure to large and small businesses, sharing his experience as master of the 4th-quarter comeback. MCAA thanks SLOAN for sponsoring this speaker. Read more about Montana and see what else is planned for MCAA2020 on our convention website.
