MCAA CEO Tim Brink Represents the Construction Industry at White House Event

On Tuesday, October 8th, 2024, MCAA CEO Tim Brink joined the White House Domestic Policy Council (DPC) and White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) for the first White House Challenge to Save Lives from Overdose Event. The event celebrated nearly 250 commitments from stakeholders across all sectors to help expand access to lifesaving opioid overdose reversal medication and reduce preventable drug overdose deaths.

“With education and awareness, we can empower people to take action and save a life.”
– Timothy J. Brink, MCAA CEO

Tim was introduced by Rahul Gupta, Director of the ONDCP. In his role representing the construction industry, Tim highlighted the importance of this crucial initiative and how important normalizing this issue is. “Reaching other trades facing substance use and overdose requires a collaborative and inclusive approach. We haven’t completely figured this out, and we all need to learn from each other. Through our Alliance with NECA, SMACNA, and TAUC, we have top-down support for this challenge, but it also requires equal support from the bottom up and everywhere in between,” Tim said.

He also highlighted MCAA’s approach to recognizing drug abuse, misuse, and addiction’s relationship with a person’s mental health, and emphasized MCAA’s award-winning mental health awareness and suicide prevention video, and our new joint Construction Mental Health Summit with SMACNA and TAUC at the 2025 Safety and Health Conference.

MCAA’s leadership in construction safety and health started 25 years ago under the guidance of longtime industry expert Pete Chaney. Over the last 25 years, MCAA has been able to attribute a decrease of about a half a million injuries, a savings to contractors of tens of billions of dollars, to these efforts, which included creating and distributing over 700 safety and health resources in multiple languages.

“The crisis often begins with the first major injury, leading to the initial prescription for pain relief. It continues on the jobsite due to the pressures of the current work environment, such as the necessity for speed to market and the fact that if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. This all contributes to the need to work through pain and the continued use of opioids,” said Brink.

MCAA supports the White House’s position encouraging employers to:

  • Train employees on how and when to use an opioid overdose reversal medications.
  • Keep opioid reversal medications in their first aid kits, both on jobsites and in offices.
  • Provide opioid overdose reversal medications to trained employees.

Tradeswomen Build Nations 2024 Inspired the Women Making a Difference in the Trades

The Tradeswomen Build Nations conference took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, from September 27-30, 2024. MCAA was honored to be part of this inspiring event, which drew over 5,200 attendees representing a diverse array of trades, including members of the United Association (UA), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Teamsters, Bricklayers (BAC), and many more.

The conference kicked off on Friday, September 27th, with a full day of exhibits. Key industry manufacturers and suppliers were featured, including major names like DEWALT and MILWAUKEE TOOL. The day concluded with an opening reception, setting the stage for a weekend of learning, networking, and solidarity.

On Saturday, September 28th, the plenary session began with a reflective and respectful opening prayer and Land Acknowledgment, followed by a warm welcome from North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) Tradeswomen Committee Chair, Vicki O’Leary. In her opening remarks, Chair O’Leary emphasized the importance of the event and the progress being made by women in the trades.

Next, attendees heard from Sean McGarvey, President of NABTU, who delivered an empowering speech, along with other notable leaders. A special moment followed when the Honorable Julie Su, Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, shared a message of support. Capping off the morning’s highlights, President Joe Biden delivered a heartfelt message of solidarity and encouragement to the tradeswomen, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping the nation’s workforce.

One of the most anticipated moments of the weekend followed the President’s address. Tradeswomen proudly took to the streets of New Orleans for the annual banner parade, cheering each other on in a vibrant display of unity and sisterhood.

The day continued with a UA-led caucus, where over 1,000 union women gathered to hear updates from UA leadership on key topics such as safety, training, recruitment, and groundbreaking new maternity benefits. The session also included remarks from MCAA President Rick Gopffarth, who spoke passionately about the growing opportunities within the industry. He highlighted a few initiatives such as the joint efforts between the UA and MCAA, The Foundations of Field Leadership course, the Women in the Mechanical Industry Conference, and the Safety Excellence Initiative focus on mental health. He concluded by emphasizing the crucial role women play in the trades and the transformative impact they continue to have on the industry.

The Tradeswomen Build Nations 2024 conference was a powerful testament to the strength, resilience, and growing influence of women in the trades, with this year’s event marking another step forward in the movement for equality and representation.

Full House, Full Impact: A Recap of Our Sold-Out MSCA24 Success

Thank you for making MSCA24 Explore a resounding success!

Beginning by Giving Back

MSCA has partnered with Convoy of Hope to help local charities in the communities where we have held our annual conferences. On Friday, September 20, numerous MSCA Board and member volunteers prepared and served a warm dinner to the homeless community, as well as performed acts of service for the Spring Rescue Mission, an organization dedicated to transforming lives and offering hope as they work collectively to combat homelessness, poverty, and addiction.

Education, Annual Convoy of Hope Packing Party, and Social Activities

Renee Fiorelli and General President Mark McManus kicked off our conference, followed by a discussion led by Garrison Wynn on “employee engagement” and how recognition, goal alignment and a clear path to success can create it. On Tuesday morning, we heard from MCAA President Rick Gopffarth followed by Alex Sheen who shared the importance of a promise. Later that morning, spouses and students continued the commitment to service by participating in the 14th Annual Convoy of Hope Packing Party, packing thousands of hygiene kits to be distributed to those in need worldwide. And to end our conference we learned to embrace our full potential – first imagining it, then believing it, and finally through definite action from human connection expert Chris Bashinelli. We had outstanding educational sessions and peer-led roundtable discussions each day. And of course, there were plenty of social events to help us enjoy our time together.

10 Anniversary of MSCA’s Everyday Hero Award Sponsored by ServiceTrade

Jobs Galore at MCAA GFF 24

Over 150 students from 34 MCAA student chapters, plus nearly 150 MCAA members and supporters attended the MCAA GreatFutures Forum in Seattle, WA at the end of September. This annual conference connects future professionals with MCAA members and the internship and full-time employment opportunities they offer. It also educates students about the ongoing changes in the field and the advantages of working in mechanical contracting.

As Career Development Committee Chair and GreatFutures Forum emcee Andrew Palcan said, “We love a good theme.”

Two years ago, students were asked to lean into “What is Mechanical Contracting” while on their journey to selecting a career. Last year, the message asked attendees to “Keep your eyes open… to the different paths to mechanical.” Now in 2024, the call to action has been made for our next generation to dig deep and take it upon themselves to be the innovative voices of the future. It’s their turn to “Move the Needle” in their careers and in our industry.

What will be the 2025 theme? You’ll have to be there to find out!

Job Fair Encouraged Networking

During the non-traditional job fair, students connected with MCAA members looking for interns and full-time new hires.  Employers proudly sported their company shirts, and students were easily identifiable in gray MCAA branded attire. Upon entry, everyone grabbed beads to signify if they were looking for or offering an internship (yellow), a full-time position post-graduation (green), or if they were attending in a supportive role to help make introductions and to enjoy the bacon-themed breakfast (purple).

Students and employers networked their way through the room, traded contact information via their new digital business cards, and even had the opportunity for quick on-site interviews in a nearby room.
