Phil Petillo Is the MCA of New Jersey’s New Executive Director

Phil Petillo is the MCA of New Jersey’s (MCANJ) new executive director. Phil has been the association’s education director for 10 years. During that time, he has made many improvements to the association’s instructional programs. He was also an integral part of communicating industry-related information, scheduling, planning, labor relations and working with MCAA. In making the announcement, MCANJ President Richard Tomaiko noted that, “Phil has demonstrated his ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and cordially. His personality and determination will undoubtedly lead to the continued success and development of the MCANJ and the Industry.” Marty Drobny will continue working with MCANJ during the transition period.

Spring Semester Starts & Students Are Using MCAA’s GreatFutures Job Board to Find Open Positions

College students across the country are gearing up to go back to school for the spring semester. Following a relaxing winter break, their #1 priority will be to secure a summer internship or full-time position. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to put your company in the spotlight! Post your entry level, full-time job or internship today and successfully grow your workforce.

How it works:

  • Login with an MCAA username and password
  • Click on the job board within the Career Development page
  • Click Manage My Jobs and Add a Job to create your posting
  • Jobs remain active for 1 month to ensure postings stay fresh
  • When the job is set to expire, a reminder will be sent for you to either “mark as filled” or “duplicate” and repost for another month
  • Interested students can view postings and submit their contact information and resume
  • Your office will be notified via email when interested students submit their resume
  • From there, your office is encouraged to continue with your company’s application and interview process

New Internship Grant Process for 2023

MCAA wants to hear about all of your mechanical contracting interns and has revised the internship grant application process to ensure program success is being rewarded and celebrated.

Part 1: MCAA members with one intern are eligible for a $1,000 grant. Companies with two or more interns may receive a $2,000 grant. One form should be filled out for each intern.  

Part 1 applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis and may be submitted once per calendar year, per intern.

Part 2: For companies successfully converting an intern (from their part 1 list) to a full-time new hire, a $500 gift card will be mailed to the company to present to their new hire. These new hire conversations are now unlimited, but the name of the new hire must be included on a part 1 list from an MCAA member company to be eligible. 

Part 2 applications may not be submitted until after their full-time start date.

New Year, New Roles for Some MCAA Staff

MCAA has realigned some staff responsibilities for the future. Sean McGuire is the new Executive Director, JRGF (John R. Gentille Foundation). He continues in his role as Executive Director, Innovation Technologies & Fabrication. Sean has turned over his Plumbing Contractors of America (PCA) role to Teresa Pezzi, who also handles the Mechanical Service Contractors of America (MSCA), a natural fit since mechanical and plumbing service frequently go hand in hand. Teresa’s Women in the Mechanical Industry (WiMI) role has transitioned to Michaela Mueller, who continues as Director, Special Projects & Initiatives. Celebrate MCAA’s 20 Years of Safety Excellence Each Month of 2023 With a Safety Resource Kit

To celebrate MCAA’s 20 Years of Safety Excellence, MCAA is offering monthly safety kits to benefit our contractors around the country and the mechanical industry workers they support. Each kit will include videos, webinars, trainings, and additional resources on each monthly topic.

January 2023: New Worker Safety & Health

To kick off the year, we are focusing on new workers. New workers are often the most vulnerable to accidents and injuries. In this month’s kit we have videos, programs, and manuals, including a New Worker Safety Orientation video and several accompanying resources. This package of resources is meant to train new workers on how to identify common hazards in the mechanical industry, and how to protect themselves from those hazards. Topics covered include stop work authority, pre-task planning, PPE, working at heights, fall protection, fall prevention, power tool safety, hazard communication, housekeeping, and emergency procedures.

Resource Highlight: MCAA’s Managing Killer Contract Clauses

Bassett Mechanical Announces Executive Leadership Promotions

Bassett Mechanical, an MCAA member, announced several leadership promotions that position the company for continued growth as well as delivering on its vision of Creating Customers for Life®. Jerod Steigenberger will become President of the 86-year-old family enterprise. Kim Bassett will assume the role of Chairperson of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, and Bill Bassett will become Chairman Emeritus. Patty Van Ryzin will be the Chief Human Resource Officer.

Kaukauna, Wisconsin-based Bassett Mechanical has been on a journey of corporate realignment and restructuring over the past few years to better serve customers and be positioned to continually adapt and evolve as an innovative and solution-oriented organization.

“Bassett is a strong family enterprise made up of over 525 associates who work tirelessly to provide quality, safe solutions to our customers with a reputation for quick response and unparalleled customer service,” said Steigenberger. “I am honored to work alongside the most talented and committed people in our industry and carry on the industry-leading reputation that the Bassett family has created and sustained over the years.”

As President, Steigenberger will be responsible for executing the vision and overseeing the day- to-day sales and operational management of the organization. In this expanded role, Steigenberger will continue his partnership with Kim Bassett, who was previously named Chief Executive Officer and President in 2009. “Jerod has brought to our organization a rare combination of financial savvy, operational excellence, and strategic thinking that has contributed to our growth trajectory in the past several years,” said Kim Bassett.

As the third generation of family leadership, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Kim Bassett is responsible for vision-setting, long-term strategy, sound governance, and stewardship of the family values and culture that have propelled Bassett to succeed. When she took on the role of Chief Executive Officer and President, she implemented Lean and continuous improvement initiatives that resulted in significant growth while continuing to sustain the strong culture and elevate the Bassett brand.

As the human resource leader, Van Ryzin has been instrumental in establishing and executing a strategic organizational structure and long-range talent management initiatives. She started with Bassett Mechanical in 1990 and held various positions before becoming Vice President of Human Resources in 2004. Company patriarch Bill Bassett states, “Patty has been a great partner to the leadership team and advocate for Bassett Mechanical. She was instrumental in guiding the family business succession from me to Kim and embodies our spirit as an organization.”

Bill also noted, “I am confident we have the right leadership and strategy to ensure we continue to lead our industry for decades to come.” Bill served as President for 35 years, guiding the company through significant change and growth, and previously transitioned to the Chairman of the Board in 2009. He will still be actively involved with the Board of Directors and leadership engagement.
