Hiring Summer Interns? Apply for Your MCAA Internship Grants!

Internships benefit both the employer and the participating student. The employer gets top talent and has a pipeline of future full-time employees. Students gain experience, create connections, develop skills and further their interest in the mechanical contracting industry.

What could be better than trying out students to see if they’re the right fit for your company? Being paid to do so! Thanks to funding provided by the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF), MCAA members receive $1,000 each when they hire up to two students as either interns or full-time employees. By providing this funding, MCERF is addressing the industry’s critical workforce shortage while at the same time giving MCAA members the tools they need to remain productive and profitable in the future.

MCAAGreatFutures.org gives members access to student profiles and resumes. The profiles are searchable by university, desired location, and even a specific skill set an employer is looking for, like BIM or AutoCAD. A keyword filter allows you to zero in on those students who fit the bill.

Not finding a match? Try reaching out to our 60 MCAA Student Chapters. The chapter advisors are a great resource to help you find the right person. And, MCAA members have exclusive access to post openings on our job board.

Share of Women Working in Construction Highest in 20 Years

According to an article published by Contracting Business, between 2017 and 2018, the number of women working in construction trades increased by 17.6 percent, rising to well over a quarter of a million women (276,000). While this growth is the highest in over two decades, women still remain underrepresented in the field.

“In 2019, women’s stark under-representation in these well-paid jobs is disconcerting, but it is very encouraging to see such strong growth in the number of women entering the construction trades. The industry still has more work to do to attract and retain women in these jobs and create a work environment that is welcoming to all workers, regardless of their gender, race, or ethnicity. Women-focused pre-apprenticeship programs and tradeswomen organizations are doing great work to help the industry adapt to a changing future of work,” comments Ariane Hegewisch, Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) Program Director on Employment & Earnings.

These findings are something to celebrate as well as motivation for the MCAA/MSCA Women in the Mechanical Industry (WiMI) to make strides in closing this gap.

Boston Opens New Training Center

MSCA Chair, Kip Bagley, (EMCOR Services Mesa Energy Systems, Irvine, CA) spoke at the New England MSCA membership meeting last month in Boston, MA. Later that week he joined Local 537 to celebrate their new Pipefitters Training Center. Also in attendance were UA General President, Mark McManus, Mayor Martin Walsh, many sate and city officials, UA International Representative C. Daniel Watts, Building Trades President, Brian Doherty, The Boston City Singers, Rev. Gerry Petringa and many LU 537 members, family members and friends.

“You have so much to be proud of  with your beautiful new training center,” remarked Bagley. “It is very impressive and I know it took a joint effort to make it a reality.”

The new facility hosts over 80 welding booths, hands on refrigeration and pipefitting classrooms and state of the art computer labs. This Class of 2023 will be the first apprenticeship class that will spend their entire five years of education in the newly built Training Center.

A special thank you to former MSCA Chair and Education Trustee for Local 537, Frank Norton, who plays an integral role in the HVAC industry in Boston and was instrumental in seeing the building of the training center come to fruition.

This is an exciting time at Local 537 and in Boston!

Protect Your Workers from Silica Hazards with this Guide

If workers inhale a large enough concentration of microscopic crystalline silica particles, it can lead to silicosis, lung cancer, and other health problems. MCAA’s Guide to Silica Safety provides mechanical construction employers with the information they need to help their workers:

  • Understand the potential hazards associated with overexposure to respirable crystalline silica
  • Identify the most common mechanical construction activities that can produce it
  • Identify common activities performed by other trades that can produce it
  • Implement the best available safe work practices to prevent overexposure
  • Comply with OSHA’s Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard

Additional Silica Resources

Whether you’re looking for help developing a written silica exposure control plan, a summary of the OSHA standard or additional training materials, MCAA has you covered with these resources:

If you have questions about any of these resources or OSHA’s silica standard, please contact Pete Chaney at pchaney@mcaa.org or 301-990-2214.

2019 Institute for Project Management Classes Begin

At many jobsites across the country, April means the removal of hard hat liners and no longer having to factor the impact of snow days into the schedule. Here at MCAA, April means the launch of the year’s first Institute for Project Management classes, where we welcome the nation’s best and brightest Mechanical PMs to our two-week intensive educational programs.

Classes 73 and 74 of the IPM spent last week learning from industry experts, honing their skills in project planning, scheduling, job cost control, and an array of other topics presented by top-notch contractor-educators from across the nation. These 68 individuals will return in September to study negotiation, change management, and leadership (among other things), and to practice what they’ve learned in our Change Order Negotiation workshop and “Crisis at the Jobsite” capstone case study.

Attendees at the Institute for Project Management learn real-world skills that they can apply to every job they manage. Beyond that, the peer-to-peer learning and networking opportunities provided by the program are every bit as valuable as the in-classroom lessons. The included photo illustrates that idea better than any words ever could: shown here is Class 73 of the IPM, who self-organized to rent a bus and visit The Salt Lick for a true Texan BBQ experience. We always say ‘you’ll learn a ton from our top-notch instructors, but you’ll learn even more from each other.’ We are pretty sure that a lot of learning took place over brisket and peach cobbler last week, and we hope that the relationships these PMs have built last for a long, long time.
