MCAA Change Order Publication Receives NECA’s Full Endorsement

The 2018 of edition of MCAA’s highly regarded construction management publication, Change Orders, Productivity, Overtime—A Primer for the Construction Industry, has received the National Electrical Contractors Association’s (NECA) full endorsement.

NECA endorsed the contents of the publication as being just as applicable to the electrical construction industry as they are to the mechanical piping and plumbing trades, furthering its use to benefit both associations’ memberships and the industry as a whole.

The publication has become a standard in the construction industry and is widely relied upon by mechanical and other specialty contractors, attorneys in construction practices, and consultants.  The 2018 edition includes new material that:

  • Clarifies the process of selecting labor inefficiency factors, which will prove particularly useful for those using the MCAA Factors to prepare loss of labor productivity equitable adjustment requests
  • Explains how you can avoid being cited for potentially costly concurrent delays to a project. The chapter also provides information to assist contractors in defining and identifying concurrent delay in a project schedule.

The publication’s lead author, Paul Stynchcomb, CCM, PSP, CFCC, collaborated with Doug Patin, Esquire on the concurrent delay chapter.

This latest chapter, like the others in the publication, was peer reviewed by a panel of MCAA contractors. Peer reviewers for the new chapter were: Robert Beck, President of John W. Danforth Company in Tonawanda, NY; Steve Dawson, President of Harrell-Fish, Inc. in Bloomington, IN; Brian Helm, President of The Helm Group in Freeport, IL; and Adam Snavely, President and CEO of The Poole & Kent Corporation in Baltimore, MD.

The UA-MCAA Labor Relations Conference Makes the Labor-Management Relationship a Win-Win for All

Join your UA and MCAA colleagues for education geared toward making the labor-management relationship a win-win for all parties. The 2019 UA-MCAA Labor Relations Conference: Succeeding Together will take place October 29 – 30, 2019, at The Mirage in Las Vegas, Nevada. This conference provides the unique opportunity to see both sides of the coin as labor and management collaborate on sessions and panel discussions to give attendees an in-depth look at what makes our relationship so important. The conference, jointly hosted by the United Association (UA) and MCAA, will feature panel discussions focused on topics such as growing apprenticeships, developing a joint labor-management strategic planning committee and retention of workers.

Acknowledging the importance of engaging the future of our organizations, the UA is asking all locals to bring one apprentice to the conference this year. MCAA will be hosting a breakout session with these apprentices to give them an opportunity to really dig into and ask questions about the management of the business with MCAA leaders one-on-one. Because apprentices are not only the future of the UA, they are the future of the MCAA as well.

To maximize our time together, MCAA is asking its members to plan joint dinners with their local labor partners following Tuesday’s reception. Exchanging ideas and experiences is how we will continue to thrive in this industry we all love, it is how we will be Succeeding Together.

Are Your Workers Properly Protecting Themselves from Skin Cancer? CNA’s New Bulletin Can Help

Skin cancer is a major concern in the mechanical construction and service industry. Every year, more than 5 million cases of skin cancer are treated nationwide. The vast majority of these cases are attributed to UV radiation from the sun.

Working in the sun without the proper protection substantially increases the risk of developing skin cancer. MCAA partner CNA recently produced an informative bulletin to help you help your workers protect themselves from skin cancer and overheating while working in the sun.

MSCA Member Companies Are Recognized for Being at the Top of Their Game

Two MSCA member companies, Atomatic Mechanical Services of Arlington Heights, IL, and Wiegmann Associates of St. Charles, MO, were recognized by Contracting Business as commercial HVAC contracting firms who are consistently at the top of their game.

There are common threads that connect them, but each firm has methods and processes that make them unique.

Each of these excellent contractors has devoted time and attention to internal processes, training and communication, and building a culture of respect for all team members.

Atomatic has yearly “themes,” introduced by president/CEO Steve Stachorek, PE. These are used to help them work on specific attitudes that are so critical to effective cultures. “For 2019, our theme is “Choose Positive,” he said.

“One of our key values is teamwork,” said Jim Bartolotta, Past MSCA Chair and Executive Vice President for Atomatic, “and it is embedded in our culture, not just words on a wall.”

Then, most importantly, each of these contracting businesses exists to provide long-lasting employment and career development for employees.

And then, of course, we can’t omit training, which is synonymous with “the future.” Wiegmann follows union training programs and also has weekly training sessions. Atomatic uses a Culture Index to survey employees on workplace issues towards increasing the professional and personal growth of its employees.

Each firm will be offered a seat on the Contracting Business editorial advisory board, and receive a commemorative piece for the trophy cabinet.

Congratulations to these Commercial HVAC Contractors of Excellence!

MCERF Funds Mechanical Training Camp for University Faculty

The Mechanical-Electrical Academic Consortium (MEAC) Faculty Training Boot Camp provided educators from universities across the U.S. with a crash course in the basics of mechanical and electrical systems. By giving educators the tools they need to more effectively teach students about our industry, it is hoped that more students will explore the career opportunities available in specialty contracting. The event took place at the Milwaukee School of Engineering from June 11-13, 2019.

MEAC 2019 Participants

Funded by the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) and Electri International, the Foundation of the National Electrical Contractors Association, the MEAC Faculty Training Boot Camp educates the faculty who teach our industries’ future professionals. This year’s program was organized by Blake Wentz, an MCERF Trustee and MSOE Department Chair. He was joined on the faculty by Shannon Nicklaus of Pittsburg State University, Tim Wentz, previously from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Lori Brown of California State University, Chico State.

The educators toured MSOE’s facilities, including the construction site of the campus’ artificial intelligence facility, the Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall. The facility is slated to open this fall.

GreatFutures Forum Attendees to Tour DC’s Museum of the Bible

MCAA’s GreatFutures Forum is set for September 19 – 21, 2019. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to tour the mechanical systems of the Museum of the Bible, one of the newer museums in Washington, D.C.

Southland Industries, an MCAA member and the HVAC contractor on the project, will be facilitating the mechanics tour.

The museum opened in November 2017. The $254-million, 430,000-square-foot Museum of the Bible project took five years from concept to the grand opening.

Portions of the museum occupy the Terminal Refrigerating and Warehouse Company Building, built in 1923. Over the course of the project, the team adapted 140,000 square feet of warehouse space, performed 240,000 square feet of infill construction and renovated an additional 50,000 square feet of existing space.

The museum houses five floors of exhibit space, research laboratories, libraries, a lecture hall, a performing arts venue, a 500-seat ballroom and a new rooftop galley with a curvilinear glass-and-metal envelope.

MCAA thanks the MCA of Metro Washington, this year’s host, and Southland Industries for their support.

Planning for Hurricane Season? MCAA Partner CNA Offers Guidance

Each year in the United States, June 1st through November 30th is considered hurricane season. The earliest in a year that a hurricane struck in the U.S. was June 9, 1966 when hurricane Alma slammed into Florida and Georgia affecting several other east coast states as well. The states most affected by hurricanes include Florida, Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, New York, and Virginia. However, eleven other other states have been hit by hurricanes, including California and Hawaii.

Because hurricanes can wreak havoc on mechanical construction and service businesses, you may want to consider planning ahead. Long-time MCAA partner in safety CNA offers guidance on the subject in one of its highly informative risk control bulletins.
